Once again, I have to say that the two soundtracks of “Chikyuu Shoujo Arjuna” Earth Girl Arjuna are great (2001). Yoko Kanno did a great job again. It is once again very varied style within one soundtrack. So here are my personal best of. And once again it contains pure moments of wonder.

I had a hard time ordering the playlist so that it perfectly flows to your ears. Once again I put OST1 followed by OST2.

OST 1, In another world

1. Aqua: Beautiful… Ethereal melody, I feel like floating in the air. It’s blissful. 6:30 minutes of pure joy. A master piece. Sung by Gabriela Robin (whom fans assume to be Yoko Kanno herself although she claims the two are different people)

2. Early Bird: Sung by Chinatsu Yamamoto. I love this theme. Chinatsu Yamamoto’s voice is so angelic and pure, it totally contrasts with the dark instrumental that follows and ends the tracks.

3. Mameshiba (Instrumental): I totally love that theme. It’s the hidden track of this first OST. The piano and violin duet is dazzling.

OST2, Onna no minato

4. One: Instrumental track that starts really slowly, but bear with it, and wait, it’s worth it. This track will take you in a long amazing trip, full of different moods and emotions.

5. Shizuka na seikatsu: Same emotions than the track above, but shorter trip. Last bit of quietness before the uproar of the next track.

6. Ashura Jittaika: Impressive violins that will soon be joined by devilish choirs.

7. Sanctuary: Sung by Maaya Sakamoto.

8. Butter Sea: A bit of calm after the uproar. It is sung by Gabriela Robin. Well just one thing I have to say that the end is highly inspired from Stina Nordenstam’s “Crime” song from her “And then she closed her eyes” album release in 1994. I jumped on my seat when I heard that part of the song… and had to verify it right away. She even sung it the same way, with a soft sensual voice.
Anyway, Yoko Kanno is a champion when it comes to getting inspired. But her music is nonetheless excellent I have to admit.

9. Saigo no Mameshiba: I didn’t take the Mameshiba original version from OST1 and picked that one instead because it was more energic and I love the arrangement (the strings). It is sung by Maaya Sakamoto. I really love that theme.

PS: Just note that I didn’t take advantage of that post to put pix of Maaya… I’m a good girl… I behave…

  • a pretty accurate selection. i miss cloĆ© from ost1 and girl with power and didn’t it rain from ost2, though.
anyway, whatever kanno touches becomes gold. from escaflowne to wolf’s rain, through cowboy beebop or aquarion… everything she does is awesome.
