Today’s pick is about anime Simoun’s soundtrack by Toshihiko Sahashi, who did compose soundtracks for famous animes such as Gundam Seed, Gundam Seed Destiny, Gunslinger Girl, Full Metal Panic!
He has a rather symphonic and classical style, which I love (I wish Yuki Kajiura would do more symphonic compositions! I also wish she would come to Paris, I would “couchsurf” her, well I’d rather bedsurf her…hmm hmm… Back to subject…).
Simoun is a nice character design anime (once you get used to it, especially the main pink-hair character Neviril who has a special character design) with a twisted story.
Everybody is born a woman and then, when they are old enough, at the age of 17, they have to go to a source to pick their gender… How weird is that?
Simone de Beauvoir’s quote “One is not born a woman, one becomes one” is kind of funny in that kinky context.
Maybe in a way it is a good way to justify more girl on girl action…?
Anyway, it’s also about religion and war… a big caricature of our society in a way.
What totally caught my attention was the Opening theme! Awesome, I put it first in this “my-fave-songs” playlist.
What is also interesting are the tunes used for the action/battle scenes, it’s totally not the typical ones, you will hear for yourself (track 2 in the playlist). All the good tracks from the anime are gathered in OST 1, so don’t be surprised to find only 2 tracks on my OST2 playlist. But don’t get me wrong, it’s still a sublime OST, and the cover is worth the look.
I won’t tell you more, check this out:
Simoun OST 1
1.Utsukushikereba Sore de li: Great! Absolutely great, I loved it from the first hearing.
2. Yōen Naru Kizuna no Hibiki: That’s the action/battle theme! Pretty unusual eh? It’s really weird when you see the anime with that track as a background sound, tango spirited, but then it becomes so natural and you grow to like it. I love it
3. Josei Kokka Dai 1: A more dramatic battle theme. More symphonic then the one above, it’s beautiful.
4. Josei Kokka Dai 2: Another battle theme. Classic lovers will adore it. Really more dramatic than the previous one.
5. Josei Kokka Dai 4: Another battle theme as well, but more refine. Awesome. It’s like a ballet. The “Simoun” fights are like a ballet actually, elegant and refine.
6. Kanashimi no Simoun Sibylla: Another tune I love, very epic.
7. Ōzora no Auriga: This track is another version of the infamous Tango-like battle track “Yōen Naru Kizuna no Hibiki”, wonderful! more energic. Bravo!
Simoun OST 2
8. Tempusu Patiumu no hadō: A totally different atmosphere, more… religious…But it also sounds very sci-fi…which is rather bizarre…
9. Hashire!!: Totally different style from the rest of the OST. It’s not a symphonic track but a modern one with drums, synth and a jazzy touch.
