Private dining

This concept did make its way in Hong Kong’s multitude of eating choice.
Hong Kong is swarming with restaurants hosting any kind of food you can think of, and private dining can sound different enough to give you back some more interest in dining out.

The first time I came to HK, I was invited to join a dinner in a Sichuan restaurant (super spicy Chinese food) and what was my surprised when I found myself entering some private apartment turned into a restaurant (kinda dirty…)!

Really unusual. And most of the time you have to book beforehand to get a table as it is not such a classical restaurant.

To find those kind of place, you have to know someone who knows that place, or else it might be difficult to find.
At least, you can taste the “real” food. Without constraints of being “too authentic” and not fitting with the local taste, those restaurants reallly make it home-made style or really give way to their imagination or can really offer you the real traditional way of cooking.

It can be some very suspicious restaurants or some culinary art restaurant, or some really really private dinners in the chef’s home, hidden in the country side, with only one meal served a day for 6 persons!
How exclusive is that?

I was not really aware of that concept in France. Well I was, but it was most likely culinary cuisine, and not an apartment turned into a restaurant.
Or it was like hiring one chef to cook your private dinner with friends in your own kitchen.

Let me know if there are some private dining in your country and share your experience!
So far I did try those really popular ones, those with very suspicious hygiene… I am eager to try the culinary ones!

  • Hey, I didn’t know they had that in HK. I heard about a place like that in NY from a friend. I was really surprised when she mentioned it - apparently, it’s not as rare as I thought. Maybe I should go and scout for a location in Toronto? ;-)
