One of the rare Yoko Kanno project. “Song to fly” (2004) reflects what Kanno does the best, classical instrumental with choirs or operatic voices. Personnally, that’s my favorite style. That is why my selection below are only classical style.
Are absent from this album any Pop (Except from a Beatles-like track:Nowhere and Everywhere) or Electro tracks, which she also excels at.
Just like her anime soundtracks, this album features different styles (there is a Circus-like song… Very weird…) and different singers. I’m not very fond of the sung track. So please listen to those 3 mater pieces, it’s really blessful.
1. Lydia: Lydia is the last song of the album, like an au revoir, but here I decided to put it first… Jadwiga RappĂ©’s operatic voice just manages to play with our heart so easily…
2.The man in the desert: After the sad “Lydia”, “The man in the desert” brings a bit of light in this musical adventure. It starts very slowly, but it is slowly but surely building your path towards the sky without you knowing it. The choirs just chime in naturally, enveloping you with a sweet warmth before fading away little by little.
3. The ship:Probably my favorite track of those 3. It’s GENIUS. Soft whispers that carress your eager ears… It’s soothing. Passionate instrumental… Then the choirs just pour down from nowhere and illuminates the song with such heavenly strenght, going up higher and higher. We see the light….
Strings and percussions, we’re going through the tempest. But we hold on tight… Here comes the sun… Victory!
Ok I stop raving, but Gosh, it’s so beautiful, it totally ravishes my brain. The final is magnificent!!!!
