Ergo Proxy is a beautiful Japanese anime, nothing like the usual anime we see. The character design (Pino cracks me up) and the backgrounds are totally designed in a different way. And in a rather awe-inspiring way. The anime is directed like a movie, the scenes are really splendid. But the plot is rather slow and twisted which makes it hard to follow.
The atmosphere is rather dark and futuristic, so is the soundtrack. It’s mainly instrumentals. But you can hear some chants now and then. And it is rather gregorian chants.
Surprisingly, the ED of the anime is “Paranoid Android” by Radiohead. I love that song, but I had to skip it at the end of each episodes. I put the OP of this anime “Kiri”, it really fits with the anime.
1. Deus ex machina: I’m starting with a song from the second Opus of the Ergo Proxy Soundtrack. Beautiful song with Gregorian chants.
2. Shampoo Planet: It’s an instrumental. It reminds me of Philip Glass, same style. That’s probably why I love that track.
3. Ophelia: A reference to Shakespeare’s Ophelia in Hamlet.
4. Fellow Citizens: It starts with Gregorian chants, but it’s not what the track is all about. Wait to “see”.
I love that track for the incredible bass it contains, you’d better have good subwoofers for a better rendition.
5. Kiri: ED of the anime. Sung by a Japanese rock band, Monoral. I didn’t like it when I was watching the 23 episodes, I always skipped it. But now, after redescovering it on the soundtrack, I grew to like it. I think you’ll be less difficult than I do, because the song is good and the singing as well.
